This property actually WAS beachfront property at one time. Some 50 million years ago this area was wetter and was covered with a shallow lake which has since come to be known as Fossil Lake in southwestern Wyoming. Poplars, wing nuts and willows filled the floodplain, while cattails, ferns and horsetails grew at the water's edge. Crocadiles over 5 meters long rested in the shallow water. Birds and bats flew in the skies. Herds of small primitive 4-toed horses grazed at the lake shore. The best fossils of this time period can be found at Fossil Butte National Monument, a ways south of Pinedale. Fossil Lake existd for approximately 3 million years. Today, we still can find petrafied wood and fish fossils just a few miles south of Pinedale, evidence of a completely different climate and ecology where Wyoming is today. click here for more information about Fossil Butte.
